Why “ironclad?”

What is in a name? I was asked not too long ago why we chose the name “Ironclad Performance”. After relaying the story of how we came to name our company I thought it would be good to tell the reason to whomever might be interested as it says something about our values and how we approach human performance. The name “Ironclad” has a couple of different meanings, it’s a little layered.

First and foremost, ironclad refers to what we believe the function of strength & conditioning serves, to reduce the risk of injury while simultaneously increasing an athlete’s ability to perform the physical tasks of their sport. Literally being ironclad is to covered in protective armor.

The second meaning that “Ironclad” alludes to is my own heritage. I am a third generation ironworker. Iron has played an important role in my life for as long as I can remember. I worked my way through college and graduate school as an ironworker and carry those lessons learned on the steel with me as a coach. The problem solving, critical thinking, and importance of work ethic learned from that trade are a cornerstone of how I approach life. Naming our company “Ironclad” also serves as a way for us to pay some subtle recognition to the fact that Iron has allowed us to pursue our dream of opening a facility to serve athletes, without the doors it opened for my grandfather, my father, and myself we would not be able to do the work that we do. So we pay our respects and lead our athletes to improve while building their own “Ironclad” bodies.
